How closures actually work

The cableway suspends for wind - the south-easter above all

• and announces it on its own website and social channels, which are the only authority. Closures come with no schedule: a morning suspension can lift by noon, a frontal day can stay shut. Our homepage strip reads the hourly summit forecast and calls the risk honestly (over ~70% cloud we call the tablecloth; sustained wind past the mid-20s km/h we call the watch) - but a forecast read is not a closure call, and we never pretend otherwise. Method and thresholds, for the curious: calibrated against a month of summit hourlies, where cloud proved essentially binary - clear or socked - which is why our verdict speaks in those terms.

The clouded-but-open day

Under the tablecloth the cars often still run, and the honest question becomes whether riding into fog is worth your R400. Mixed skies burn off - give the mountain until early afternoon before surrendering. Full cloth all day: spend the ticket money below, where the weather usually is not.

The plan B that’s secretly a plan A

Legs: Platteklip Gorge climbs in and out of the cloud line and needs no cableway (check wind sense; the mountain in a gale is nobody’s hike). Wheels: the peninsula day - penguins at Boulders, Cape Point’s cliffs, the Atlantic coast road - runs gloriously in weather that grounds the cable car, and at $46 it costs less than the ride it replaces. Sunset redemption: if the wind drops by evening, the last cars turn a closed morning into the best hour of the trip.
